Motorola Q9

I recently changed my cellphone to a Motorola Q9.

I have been using it for two weeks, and I must say that this is a great device. It has the best keyboard I have seen on a smartphone device to date, autonomy is great : 3 to 4 days with direct push on GPRS/EDGE. I always disable 3G for my devices because this radio technology is not as well optimized as GPRS/EDGE and the battery life usually suffers from this.

We did a new skin for EveryWAN Remote Support (both Personal and Professional editions), that you can download:

Motorola Q9 skin for Sparus EveryWAN Remote Support (Zip file, 264 Kb)

To install it, unzip the two files in the skin subdirectory of your RemoteSupport install directory, usually located at c:\Program Files\Sparus Software\EveryWAN Remote Support or C:\Program Files\Sparus Software\EveryWAN Remote Support Personal Edition.

IBM Lotus, Coheris, Sparus Software

I saw this morning a nice demonstration of Lotus Sametime and Lotus Traveler, masterfully executed by Keyvan Tofighi from IBM (picture above). And guess what saved him his life when his Windows Mobile emulator did not start on his PC just a few minutes before the demo in front of customers and prospects ?

a) Our COO gave him a tip

b) He used the free EveryWAN Remote Support Personal Edition

c) He knew about Sparus Software

Answer: all of the above.

Since there are brilliant free tools to be able to give nice Windows Mobile demonstrations using a videoprojector, why would one want to use an emulator ? Unless of course, he does not have a Windows Mobile device.

Treo800w specs are out

Engadget just released some "leaked" specs of the Palm Treo800w.

Looking at the new Treo800w, you have the impression to see a Treo700/750w with Wifi. The battery life is not yet known, and if only it had the autonomy of the Treo650 (5 or 6 days with my usage at that time).

I lost my Treo 750 in a Parisian cab last year. Hopefully, it was protected by EveryWAN Secure Device, so that I did not bother for sentitive information.

That was my last Palm device, and the 800w may have been my next, if it wasn’t just a year too late for this device. A Pocket PC with a touch screen that you can’t use with your thumb because of the angle between the screen and the case: you can’t touch the edges and can’t close this little black cross in the upper right corner without a stylus. So 2007 !

I was a huge Palm fan, I had to hide my Treo650 (running PalmOS) when meeting with Microsoft before I got a 750w: the first Windows Mobile device from Palm to hit the French market… I feel that HTC or Samsung both ship smartphones that are far more competitive today. The Samsung i780 or the HTC Touch Diamond are more likely to compete with the likes of iPhone or BlackBerries. The Treo800w will probably still be a nice device with the usual ease of use that Palm infuses in its devices. So you may consider it, if you are looking for a Pocket PC with a keyboard at a fair price.

What do you think of this new Windows Mobile device from Palm ?

Lotus Traveler anyone ?

IBM Lotus have shipped a great product that has not yet received the attention it deserves: Lotus Traveler. If your enterprise messaging and collaboration platform is IBM Lotus Domino and you want to use it on your favorite Windows Mobile device or if one of your VIPs is asking you for just that, really give it a try. It is simple to setup and use, and if you use EveryWAN Mobility Manager it is also easy to deploy, secure and manage. EveryWAN supports Lotus Domino Directory as its user information and authentication source, so you won’t have to replicate user information all over the place.

If you are in Paris the 1st of July, we hold a joint seminar with Coheris Global Services at Tour Descartes - IBM France about IBM Lotus Notes Traveler and how you can use it to bring mobile email to your organization and become an organizational hero.

Domino/Notes users: You can finally drop your BlackBerry. Moreover, if you believe that Echelon is listening to you, it may also help you protect your privacy and your business too… well at least there is some controvercy about this point !

EveryBLOG

This is the first post ever for EveryBlog.

Just a few words about me, I am Christophe Pierret, the Chief Technology Officer at Sparus Software. I spent nearly all of my career working in research and development for software publishers like Business Objects (now a SAP company) and Sparus Software.

I also wrote the first line of code of EveryWAN: Sparus Software’s flagship product (and many other lines of code since).

I feel that Sparus Software has reached a great milestone with EveryWAN Mobility Manager 2.2. We have a stable, scalable, feature-rich product that enables enterprises to manage and secure their Windows Mobile devices, while lowering the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of their mobile device fleet.

Lots of IT people have heard about Sparus or EveryWAN in France and Belgium. Many users are using our solutions worldwide: we have users in more than 40 countries as of today. But until recently we were still pretty much French-language-centric in our communication.

We feel now is the time to go global, that’s why this blog is in English.
